After New York Jets talked the talk and walked the walk taking care of New England Patriots last Sunday, I was expecting the war of words will break out before the Sunday kickoff; I wondered how the brash Jets coach, Rex Ryan, would trash talk Steelers coach Mike Tomlin or Big Ben. But, All Quiet on the Western (PA) Front (also on the Eastern front for that matter); it has been mute; the words (or the war) never came. Rex Ryan must be at a loss to words. If you cannot beat them at least admire them; Rex Ryan even said Mike Tomlin is one of his favorite coaches. He began to talk like a gentleman.
There was a lengthy article (“How do you like the Jets now?”) at Wall Street Journal Sports section on Jan. 18. It basically defended Jets behavior saying “it’s time to curb the moralizing about football civility”.
Among the fable and lore of the past of Cardinals, I like Dizzy Dean (the pitcher) the most. Before the 1931 Cardinals-Tigers playoff, Dean bragged, “Cardinals will take them Tigers like a bulldog takes a pussy cat.” And talk like this should fill the air (the media) while welcoming the Jets to the Steel City at their own peril.
As Dr. Cheng-Hung Lin said, the Jets is a Big Bird. At the end of the game when the Jets stunned the Patriots, several Jets players ran merrily off the field with their arms stuck out horizontally like the Big Birds flying. (photo credit to Wall Street Journal).
