Frederick Sanger was awarded the Nobel Prize (chemistry) in 1958 for his work on protein structure and a way to figure out the sequence of amino acids in protein (insulin in his work). He got his second Nobel Prize (again in chemistry) in 1980 for devising a way to sequence the bases in nucleic acids, such as DNA. He is indeed the “man of sequence” (also a man of consequence).

If Sanger is a “man of sequence”, then Hans Krebs (see photo) is a “man of cycle”. Krebs discovered the urea cycle (converting the toxic ammonia to the harmless urea) and citric acid cycle or tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle now bears his name—Krebs cycle.
Krebs was a physician by training (his father was a German surgeon). Being a Jewish, he was fired from his medical research job at the University of Freiberg in 1933 when the Nazi took over the government. And this happened even after he achieved the international fame for discovering the urea cycle in 1932. With their policy of expelling all Jewish scientists from German and Austria, Hitler’s Nazi was either too ignorant or too arrogant about the supremacy of the “Aryan race”.
He fled to Gowland Hopkins Lab at Cambridge University in June 1933, thanks to a Rockefeller Foundation grant, which interrupted for one year. In 1935 he moved to Sheffield University where he stayed for nearly 20 years with the continuing support of Rockefeller grants.
It was at Sheffield University where he worked out the TCA cycle, work of which was sent to and rejected by Nature and was later published at a Dutch journal called Enzymologia. Rejecting an earth-moving (驚天動地) discovery article must have been a life long regret for the Nature editors.
Simply put, Krebs cycle is the furnace to burn the fuel of life producing energy to keep us going. In his Nobel Lecture (citric acid cycle), Krebs thanked Fritz Lipmann, who shared the 1953 Nobel Prize with him, for the discovery of the 2-carbon acetyl coenzyme A, without which the concept of a cycle is incomplete, if not impossible. Recall the 4-C oxaloacetate must combine/react with the 2-C acetyl coenzyme A to make 6-C citrate/citric acid, thus named citric acid cycle.
It was initially thought this was just the burning of carbohydrate, but it was later confirmed that protein and fat also enter this furnace of life. In fact, all carbon atoms of fatty acid enter the cycle as the form of acetyl coenzyme A.
Fritz Lipmann is another Jewish scientist who fled the Nazi German in 1932 and settled at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), where, I believe, the acetyl coenzyme A was discovered.
