National Cancer Institute (NCI) director Dr. Harold Varmus
is to step down at the end of March. He
is a giant in science/medicine; his Nobel Prize (1989) is the cellular origin
of retroviral oncogenes. I had an
article about him (“The boring scientist”) in my blog on 1/17/2007 before he
became NCI director; he was then the president of Memorial Sloan-Kettering
Cancer Center in NYC and was the NIH director before that.
Talking about the genetic basis of cancer, Renato Dulbecco
came to my mind. I wrote my version of
his obituary when the Wall Street Journal inexcusably neglected to have one in 2012.
Boring scientists; boring scientific writings. But this is real “life changing medicine”
(borrowed from UPMC motto/ad).
