Lincoln: Movie critic series No. 9, Capitol Dome

The Capitol one sees in the movie is not U.S. Capitol, instead it is the Virginia State Capitol that Spielberg dressed it up to make it the U.S. Capitol in Lincoln’s day.

The dome was not finished yet when Lincoln took the oath on March 4, 1861 to deliver his First Inaugural Address.  Lincoln insisted continuing the construction of the Capitol Dome during the war, saying, “If people see the Capitol going on, it is a sign we intend the Union shall go on.”

  1. I just saw the movie and had the same reaction, so I looked it up at the US Capitol Building web site. The dome reconstruction was completed in December 1864, so the movie shot of the finished dome is historically accurate. The scene showed Lincoln delivering his second inaugural address in March 1865.
