Basil and Tomato: odd couple or good company?

While reading about what to eat with basil, Joy came across this and sent to me,

“The other great thing about basil is that you should grow one basil plant between each tomato plant in your garden. The plants compliment each other and the basil acts as a deterrent to many of the bugs that like tomato.”

She thought that was a helpful tip and asked “do you guys do this?”

We didn’t know it, but I showed her the photos of our basils sitting besides tomatoes. Joy must be amazed at our intuitive insight or our profound knowledge in gardening. But, come to think about it, when we have so many tomatoes scattered all over the garden, no matter where we planted the basils; they will end up finding tomatoes as their neighbor.
