Katy’s report to World Journal (世界日報): 林文玉 (Kiara Lin) is crowned Butler County Young Miss

Kiara Lin, whose father is Chinese descent, ages 9, was crowned as Butler County Young Miss in the Pittsburgh Butler County Beauty Pageant on July 17.

The Pittsburgh Chinese Americans community was traditionally not enthusiastic about the pageant activities.  Since the daughter of Mrs. 謝家碧 won the title of Miss Pennsylvania Teen, she has invited Miss Teen from various states to attend the OCA New Year Festival celebration; the winners from 14 States Miss pageants were invited to attend the New Year banquet this year.

At which time林文玉 expressed her admiration to these pageant beauties whose goodwill visits brightened the festival spirit.  謝家碧 thus encouraged her parents to let her participate the Butler County Young Miss pageant.  The daughter of 謝家碧 also gave 衣著簡單大方 a how-to lesson of pageant through her personal experience.

In participating the pageant 林文玉 dressed simple and elegant, not over-dressed; her performance was quite appropriate for the occasion.  Her self introduction was unique.  She opened her remark calmly, “你好嗎? This is the Chinese greeting.  My name is林文玉 (Kiara Lin), my grandmother, Professor 林富美, taught me Chinese since I was a child. . . .”  She let the audience know what are her favorite activities and what she’ll do when she grows up.  Walking on the stage she kept her gentle smile looking at the pageant judges from New York City.  She at times turned around slowly at ease so the family and friends could take the pictures.  This was in stark contrast to the other participants who hurried across the stage.  Among many blonde beautiful girls, Kiara Lin was the only black-hair girl; she has the advantage of having Chinese and American parents.

This is her first participation in beauty pageant.  Her family and friends all take pride and delight in her winning the Butler County Young Miss title and the most photogenic award.

林文玉 奪「巴特勒郡年輕小姐」后冠

匹茲堡年僅九歲、有一半華裔血統的林文玉 (Kiara Lin )，17日在匹茲堡巴特勒郡選美比賽中奪得「巴特勒郡年輕小姐」后冠，並贏得「最上鏡小姐」及一筆獎學金。

匹茲堡華裔圈子一向對選美活動不太熱衷。自從謝家碧的女兒奪得「賓州妙齡小姐」頭銜後，她每年都熱心邀請各州妙齡小姐來參加華人新年慶典，今年更邀請14州的冠軍小姐參加新年晚宴。

當時林文玉就很羨慕這些代表各州來親善的小姐們。謝家碧因此鼓勵林文玉的父母讓她參加匹茲堡北部「巴特勒郡小姐」的選美比賽；謝家碧女兒更傳授一些選美出奇制勝的技巧。

林 文玉選美時衣著簡單大方，表現恰如其分，並未過分盛裝。九歲的她自我介紹與眾不同，她開場白從容的說：「你好嗎？這是中國人問候語。我叫林文玉 （Kiara Lin)。我的祖母林富美教授，從小教我中文。…」她讓大家知道她的喜愛活動與長大想做什麼。她走台步時保持微笑並注視從紐約市來的評審們，並時而徐徐轉 身讓台下親友拍照，毫不怯場。與其他同齡參賽者匆忙走過場截然不同。全場以金色長髮女孩居多，林文玉是唯一的黑髮女孩，她的爸爸林凱平是華裔，媽媽是西方 人。她有中西混血的優勢。

這次她當選「巴特勒郡年輕小姐」和「最上鏡小姐」，這是她生平第一次參加選美，在場親友都欣喜萬分.
