Grand March in Tannhauser is the runner-up to Beethoven's Ode to Joy

I do not like Wagner’s opera that much, I don’t know why, it is nothing to do with his anti-semitic writings, and the fact that he was Hitler’s idol doesn’t bother me.  But I like his libretto very much, he wrote libretto for all his operas.

His Tannhauser is based on an ancient (13th century) German poems.  Some of the plots may not be logical in modern view.  The death of Princess Elizabeth at the end doesn’t make sense to me.

I actually like a Grand March in Act II.  A Singing Tournament to be held at the Music Hall. Marching music is playing while guests arriving, followed by chorus in exciting, joyful and exalted spirit.

Nothing can beat Beethoven’s Ode to Joy (Symphony No 9), but I’ll place this Grand March as the runner-up.

Joyfully we greet the noble hall,

where may art and peace alone linger ever,

and the joyous cry long ring out:

Wagner: Tannhäuser March (''Hail, Bright Abode'')

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SB-P6lqP76k

Tannhäuser: "Grand March"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mT5Igmv8eow

Grand March (又是 march——來賓陸續而來又是 chorus).

Must Watch~ Music Survives Alzheimer's Seiji Ozawa, famous Japanese conductor, has Alzheimer's. Zubin Mehta recently paid tribute to him by taking him to hold

Absolutely on music:  conversation with Seiji Ozawa,

(Bernstein and Karajan), but I see these two maestros in him.

Classic Talk

Classic talk 4/3/2019

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yXg9m2X0ZrY

Alzheimer.

Norma

Sondra Radvanovsky as Norma in Metropolitan Opera production

Bellini's Norma: Casta Diva, by 美國土產的 soprano Sondra Radvanovsky

Casta Diva.

Casta Diva and the four Bellini's “Norma” in the post WWII period

Bellini said if there were a shipwreck he had only one of his operas to rescue, it would be Norma.  Casta Diva is the most famous aria that Bellini said he rewrote 8 times to perfect it.

Bellini's Norma: Casta Diva, by home-made American soprano Sondra Radvanovsky

This is the story when Caesar built the Roman Empire, the Romans fighting with Celtic Gaul (now western Europe).  Norma is a druid priestess (druid is a sort of Celtic religion thing) and Casta Diva is the scene when she prays to the moon goddess for peace so that war wouldn't break out with the Romans. So the aria was sung with a somber and heavy heart, wary of the war that may still come.

Following Australian Joan Sutherland's debut as Norma in 1964, Luciano Pavarotti called her “the greatest female voice of all time.”  I cannot find a good youtube of Sutherland's Casta Diva, but here is a full-length of her Norma, fast forward to 30:40 to 35:30 (or to 40:15). The 1978 sound recording is not the best.

(Anvil)

Anvil chorus in Verdi’s Il Trovatore

One of the famous Verdi’s choruses is Anvil in Il Trovatore.  It depicts a day in Gypsy life: hard work begins at dawn, the gypsy ladies pour a drink to cheer. The best part is when the hammers hit the anvils with the arms “melodiously” swinging.

It has nothing to do with the plot, I think Verdi composes this chorus to enrich the music.  This Metropolitan Opera production is the best in my view.

I also like the “I’ll be there” scene in the movie The Grapes of Wrath. While bidding farewell to his mom, Tom Joad (Henry Fonda) utters the memorable “monologue”, thanks to Steinbeck’s powerful writing. Steinbeck would be pleased that Henry Fonda is his Tom Joad.

Ma Joad (played by Jane Darrell) hardly says anything, but her eyes gave you a heavy heart for a loving, worrying mother.  I think Jane Darrell is the lady who fainted upon seeing the newly widowed Scarlett wants to dance with Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind.

Il Trovatore: A tender duet in face of death amidst violence and horror

This is a tender duet between a gypsy mother and a son she raised in Verdi’s Il Trovatore (The Troubadour).  The plot is so convoluted and complex that it will be ill-fitted on FB page (initially posted in Facebook).  Let’s just say Azucena (mother) and Manrico (son) are sentenced to be burnt on stake by Count di Luna, who is actually Manrico’s brother.  The brothers are not aware of the truth, only the gypsy mother knows, but wouldn't tell because of her obsession of avenging her mother's death.  Mother and son sing the tender duet reminiscing the quiet good old days on the mountain.

Il Travatore (

她不說,等到 Manrico 被燒死後才說 「Mother, you are avenged」這個 gypsy mother 終於替她母親報仇。

The Magic Flute: A romantic fairy tale that delves into religious philosophy

Mozart’s The Magic Flute begins with a romantic fairy tale that delves into religious philosophy, exemplified by high priest Sarastro’s solemn, dignified and melodious aria, invoking “O Isis und Osiris” before Tamino and Pamina to go through a series of trials.  They’ll be allowed to get married if they pass the tests to prove they are worthy of entering the Temple of Light.  It is sort of a solemn prayer.

No wonder George Bernard Shaw (he began his career as a music critic) said, “It is the only music which might be put into the mouth of God without blasphemy.”

O Isis und Osiris - Franz Josef Selig

難怪蕭伯納(他是以音樂批評家起身的) 說, “It is the only music which might be put into the mouth of God without blasphemy.”

Incomparable Bizet's Carmen: Act I

If I were allowed to see one opera only, I would choose Bizet's Carmen, no doubt about it. And I am not alone. After seeing it twenty times, Friedrich Nietzsche proclaimed it one of the greatest opera masterpieces. Upon seeing it in Russia, Tchaikovsky predicted that in ten years it would be the world’s most popular opera, and it is still so nearly a century and half later. Johannes Brahms, was reportedly “irresistibly attracted to it.”

Maurice Ravel (French composer) found three things in music “paragons of perfection”: the lyrical elegance of Franz Schubert, the Violin Concerto of Mendelssohn, and Bizet’s Carmen.

Yet Bizet died rather suddenly 3 months after the premiere. In fact, the response to the first performance was so 'cold' that Bizet wandered in the dark streets of Paris wondering what went wrong. Rumor had it that Bizet died of “broken heart”, although he had been known to have chronic throat problem. Some speculate some sort of embolism.

A good beginning is half success. Let's enjoy Act I first

Habanera

Elina Garanca as Carmen
The first aria Carmen (a gypsy cigarette worker) sings is Habanera or “ L'amour est un oiseau rebelle” (many of the arias have no special name, they are simply known by the beginning lyric), telling that love is free, follows no rules. And indeed loving Carmen is a dangerous thing. Elina Garanca sings Carmen in the production we saw. She is a Russian (now Latvian, so unlike Anna Netrebko, she is not sanctioned by America and EU) mezo-soprano. The leading role is usually soprano, Carmen is exception, mezo-soprano.

Carmen: "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle" or Habanera (Elina Garanca), accompanied by chorus.

Montserrat Cabelle

This is the best Hebanera in my view, sung by Montserrat Cabelle in 2009, she has since passed away. Elina Garanca sings it seductively, that reflects the character of Carmen. This aria doesn't call for flirting or seduction

(She can hardly walks, requiring two people helping to walk)但一開始唱 (but once the singing begins everything comes alive, 生龍活虎,中氣十足.

There are a variety of reasons why Carmen is so popular: many good arias, duets and choruses, as well as good story, There is a female supporting role, Micaela, who is Jose's childhood playmate in the village and who is in love with Jose. Jose's mother sent her to the city (Seville) to see her son.

The role of Micaela is created to contrast Carmen.

Carmen:
city girl, attractive & vivacious, flirty & seductive, crafty, unfaithful

Micaela:
country girl, simplistically beautiful, not flirty, shy & reserved, sincere, faithful
