Katy is supposed to cover western Pennsylvania/greater Pittsburgh area for the World Journal (世界日報). But, due to our proximity to Morgantown, W.V. and thanks to Mrs. Wen’s information and invitation, Katy attended a gathering of the professors and graduate students at West Virginia University (WVU), celebrating the lunar New Year at the WVU campus on February 12. The mechanical and aerospace engineering Professor Kang (康世仁教授) and many other professors, along with their families and students all enjoyed delicious cuisines and good company, talking about things happened at home far away and long ago.
Professor Kang introduced the guests in general and Mrs. Wen in particular; her late husband, Professor Wen (溫錦榮教授) was a distinguished professor in chemical engineering, well known not only in WVU community, but also in his field among the nation.
Attended were also several American students learning Chinese; they uttered Happy New Year (恭喜新年好) in perfect Chinese and sang many Chinese songs. Each and everyone wrote beautiful calligraphy of “幸福” (luck), “有餘” (abundance), “感謝” (grateful), and “開心” (happy), etc. They instantly became a show and decoration of Chinese calligraphy. A game of idioms puzzle was played among parents-children, testing the mutual understanding among families.
Members of the Taiwanese Students Association gave out the red envelopes (紅包) to the children and the professors alike, truly reflecting the respect and appreciation to the teachers. There were also door prize drawings to the lucky winners. A box of books, “Taking care of Taiwan” (顧台灣) authored by 蔡同榮, a legislator in Taiwan (台灣立法委員), were also distributed.
All were very pleased with the opportunity getting together to celebrate the lunar New Year and renew the warm and affectionate teacher-student relationship. (may click the photo to enlarge it)
