Emily Dickinson once called herself “a lunatic on bulbs”,
referring to her passion for daffodils, hyacinth and other spring perennials.
So from the mould,
Scarlet and Gold –
Many a Bulb will rise –
Hidden away cunningly,
From sagacious eyes –
Being true Dickinsonian gardeners, we did
everything the way Emily did; we’re not quite ‘lunatic’ as she was, just a bit ‘crazy’—we bought
about 300 bulbs of tulips, hyacinths and daffodils and planted them
last November. Realizing that we missed
the purple tulips, I bought some from WalMart—a few have blossomed. Without planting the bulbs I feel like
cheating.
