Daffodils: here, there and every where

Last year I posted “Daffodil in our garden and in the literature” on April 3, but by mid-March (Janice, can I say Middlemarch? how are you progressing with it?) this year daffodils were already here, there, and every where in our front yard and by the house.

Daffodil is the first flower in spring and that led Emily Dickinson to say it reveals the secret of sky.  Daffodils must be the first one to hear the “steps of the spring” (春天的腳步) and bloom ahead of their peers.  This is Emily Dickinson’s “Secret”,

The skies can’t keep their secret!
They tell it to the hills —
The hills just tell the orchards —
And they the daffodils!
