Daniel Day-Lewis (of the Age of Innocence fame) is to play Lincoln in the movie Lincoln by DreamsWorks, directed by Steven Spielberg. The movie will base on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s book, Team of Rivals: The political genius of Abraham Lincoln.
The newspaper reported that Daniel Day-Lewis and Doris Kearns Goodwin toured several historic sites in Illinois. I certainly hope Daniel Day-Lewis will begin to read Lincoln (not just the Team of Rivals) if he hadn’t already done so. To play and to be Lincoln, one needs to get to his mind and the only way is to read him—every word he wrote and spoke, not just to visit the places where he walked.
Had this story occurred before Shakespeare’s time, we may savor another historical play that rivals the charismatic and gallant Tudor heroes of Shakespeare’s. I bet the Bard would call the play Lincoln: American Triumph and Tragedy
